Benefits of the Nuvite Program

Nuvite Chemical promotes appearance programs that directly influence the high drag sensitivity zones of an aircraft. These programs are incorporated within the associated routine cleaning operations that enhance appearance control. The quickest program, with added paint appearance benefits, is to utilize the simple replacement of routine wetwash/rinse cleaning with a scheduled drywash/protection program. Tech and Gear cleans will still require a wetwash/rinse for inspection. A more intense program, but with greater return expectations is the brightwork polishing of leading edges. Wings, horizontal and vertical edges present the primary high drag zones of any aircraft movement through a fluid air. The more efficient the Boundary Air (Laminar) flow over the wings the easier the lift and the lower the drag coefficients. The obvious advantages of an Aerodynamically clean aircraft fall into two categories:

  • The Economic advantage: Fuel efficiency, is directly related to the reduction of resistance associated with motion of an aircraft through the fluid environment of airspace. When discussing the aerodynamics of motion, every engineer will readily agree that a clean, slick surface creates less turbulence (minimal interference) when displacing surrounding air.
  • The Cosmetic advantage: Passenger's perception of aircraft maintenance and an airlines concern of passenger safety, is based on the livery presentation to the customer as they look out the plate glass of the jetway. A visibly clean, shiny aircraft is perceived as a new and safe aircraft. Carbon trails, skydrol leaks, hydraulic streaks, oxidized paint, window tears - all present an image of poor aircraft maintenance. When the passenger sees an aircraft framed with the bright reflection of the leading edges accenting the livery scheme, this is translated similar to having an expensive frame around a print of a classic painting. Basically, you would never see a Rembrandt with a cheap frame. The frame is not part of the quality of the painting, but does "reflect" the value and quality of an airlines maintenance process.

    Some interesting facts:

    • When setting the a world record a Qantas Boeing 777-200LR had 150kg of dirt washed off (source: The Australian - Nov 18, 2005)
    • All aircraft off the Boeing production lines have their leading edges polished with Nu-Shine II prior to their release. Also, Boeing insists that all sub-contractors working on their aircraft use only Nu-Shine II for polishing of leading edges!
    • Professional cleaners appreciate Nu Power II. It's fast and easy to use and offers significant savings on labour
    • Custom Planes magazine writer Ron Caraway tested NuPower II and gained seven mph and 50 rpm in his racing plane - he called it "Speed in a Bottle!". (Custom Planes magazine - April 2004 issue)
    • An excessively dirty aircraft can account for 0.1% of drag (source: Fuel Conservation Airframe Maintenance for Environmental Performance - Sep 2006)
    • The effect of 1% of drag is an extra 70,000 gallons of fuel burned on typical utilization of a Boeing 777 (source: Fuel Conservation Airframe Maintenance for Environmental Performance - Sep 2006)
